During a media briefing on Tuesday, 22 October, the Free Market Foundation (FMF) called on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to dramatically overhaul the trade policy environment in South Africa.
These calls follow from a policy paper, developed by the FMF, which provides recommendations to policymakers in South Africa’s post-2024 government to enable greater freedom to trade – thereby enhancing productivity, boosting economic growth and ultimately reducing both the breadth as well as the depth of poverty and unemployment in South Africa.
In its paper, the FMF argues that the GNU has a unique opportunity to reshape the country’s socio-economic landscape provided they have the political will to do so.
“With unemployment at a staggering 32.9%, and the economy struggling to achieve even 1% GDP growth per capita for over the past decade, it is clear that South Africa requires urgent economic reform. The FMF’s Liberty First initiative leverages findings from the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) report to propose solutions that enhance productivity, encourage investment, and ultimately reverse the socio-economic decline,” said Dr Morné Malan, Deputy Head of Policy at the FMF.
According to the FMF, the role of international trade and exchange as an engine of growth, prosperity and human flourishing has been a central feature of economic theory and analysis since the inception of the field as a scientific discipline.
“Our recommendations to the GNU focus on eliminating restrictive tariffs, reducing unnecessary regulations, and opening financial markets. These are necessary steps to build a prosperous future for all South Africans,” Malan argued.
“These reforms are designed to stimulate competition, lower prices, and create opportunities for South Africa’s impoverished and unemployed. The FMF firmly believes that placing liberty first in trade policy will lead to greater wealth and human flourishing for all,” Malan concluded.

Tydens ‘n media-inligtingsessie op Dinsdag, 22 Oktober, het die Vryemarkstigting (FMF) ‘n beroep op die Regering van Nasionale Eenheid (RNE) gedoen om die handelsbeleidsomgewing in Suid-Afrika dramaties te hersien.
Hierdie oproepe spruit uit ‘n beleidsdokument, ontwikkel deur die FMF, wat aanbevelings aan beleidmakers in Suid-Afrika se post-2024-regering verskaf om groter vryheid om handel te dryf moontlik te maak – en sodoende produktiwiteit te verhoog, ekonomiese groei te bevorder, en uiteindelik beide die breedte sowel as die diepte van armoede en werkloosheid in Suid-Afrika te verminder.
In sy beleidsagenda voer die FMF aan dat die RNE ‘n unieke geleentheid het om die land se sosio-ekonomiese landskap te hervorm, mits hulle die politieke wil het om dit te doen.
“Met werkloosheid van ‘n verbysterende 32,9%, en die ekonomie wat die afgelope dekade sukkel om selfs 1% BBP-groei per capita te behaal, is dit duidelik dat Suid-Afrika dringende ekonomiese hervorming benodig. Die FMF se Liberty First-inisiatief maak gebruik van bevindinge uit die Fraser Institute se Economic Freedom of the World (EFW)-verslag om oplossings voor te stel wat produktiwiteit verbeter, beleggings aanmoedig en uiteindelik die sosio-ekonomiese agteruitgang omdraai,” sê dr. Morné Malan, adjunkhoof van beleid by die FMF.
Volgens die FMF is internasionale handel se rol as ‘n enjin van groei, voorspoed, en welvaart ‘n sentrale kenmerk van ekonomiese teorie en ontleding sedert die ontstaan van die veld as ‘n wetenskaplike dissipline.
“Ons aanbevelings aan die RNE fokus op die verwydering van beperkende tariewe, die vermindering van onnodige regulasies, en die oopstel van finansiële markte. Dit is noodsaaklike stappe om ‘n voorspoedige toekoms vir alle Suid-Afrikaners te bou,” het Malan aangevoer.
“Hierdie hervormings is ontwerp om mededinging te stimuleer, pryse te verlaag, en geleenthede vir Suid-Afrika se armes en werkloses te skep. Die FMF glo vas dat om vryheid eerste in handelsbeleid te plaas sal lei tot groter rykdom en maatskaplike vooruitgang vir almal,” het Malan afgesluit.
