FMF launches Campaign for Home Rule – ‘more local authority key to better governance’

FMF Press Release (Liberty Freedom 1)

8 April 2024

On Thursday, 11 April 2024, the Free Market Foundation (FMF) will launch its ‘Campaign for Home Rule’, at the Fire & Ice Hotel in Cape Town. The campaign is aimed at reviving South Africa’s old, proud, and increasingly relevant federalist tradition.

FMF CEO, David Ansara, and Head of Policy, Martin van Staden, will address guests and members of the media on the day.

The launch event follows a roadshow to highlight the urgent need for more authority to be given to provincial and local governments and local and commercial communities.

The roadshow kicked off in Gqeberha on 5 April, stopping at Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Hermanus, and Paarl, before ending in Cape Town.

The FMF holds the view that the most relevant decisions of governance must be taken by those most affected. This would usually be municipal governments and even more local, non-political communities, followed by provincial support and coordination mechanisms. Affected stakeholders understand their communities best and are best placed to make important decisions of governance.

We believe that South Africa’s crises are caused by bad policy that emanates from the central government. Voters in the provinces and municipalities have a negligible say in how they are governed, despite South Africa’s formally federal constitution.

We question whether local government is doing everything it can to eliminate or at least soften this harm and ask whether it might it be time to push the boundaries towards greater power resting with more local authorities.

Members of the media are invited to attend the event.
