The Free Market Foundation (FMF) is proud to announce that its Khaya Lam (My Home) Land Reform Project was bestowed with the Bertie Lubner Humanitarian Award at the Investec Jewish Achiever Awards on Sunday, 2 November.

Khaya Lam has to date facilitated the transfer of some 21,000 title deeds from municipal governments to indigent families across South Africa, unlocking more than R3,1 billion in dead capital.

The first title deed handover event took place in 2013, when 100 deeds were transferred in recognition of the 100 years that had passed since the introduction of the Natives Land Act.

Jewish South Africans have made an outsized contribution to the success of Khaya Lam.

Perry Feldman, ably assisted by his wife Veronica, took on the reins of realising the ambitious goal of turning dead capital into productive, secure property rights – the brainchild of former FMF President Leon Louw. Perry dedicated many years of his life to Khaya Lam.

Sadly, Perry passed away in May 2021.

Long-time FMF associate Terry Markman then took over as Khaya Lam, a role he continues to occupy today. Markman has steered the project through its recent period of exponential growth.

Searle and Lorna Sacks stepped into the breech on ground level where Perry thrived.

“What an incredible honour it is to receive, on behalf of Khaya Lam, the Bertie Lubner Humanitarian Award, and to be associated with his three-decade old charity, Afrika Tikkun,” says Markman. “On behalf of the 21,000 municipal tenants who are now homeowners, I thank you all.”

Khaya Lam’s success has come mainly from our partners – funders, municipalities, conveyancers, and the dedicated team of people who have one common goal: to provide title deeds to those who have never owned their home.

Khaya Lam has enjoyed the generous sponsorship of Johann Rupert through the Reinet Foundation and Remgro, which has funded the majority of the 21,000 transfers, among many others.

“Khaya Lam is an initiative of the Free Market Foundation, a policy advocacy organisation, that holds the right to private property out as the indispensable ingredient for a free and prosperous society. Khaya Lam is the perfect demonstration of the FMF’s commitment to the imperative of private ownership over extractive statism,” concludes David Ansara, FMF CEO.

FMF Khaya Lam Grondhervormingsprojek ontvang Bertie Lubner Humanitarian Award

Ongelukkig is Perry in Mei 2021 oorlede.
