Over its long history the Free Market Foundation has deemed it necessary to recognise the varied contributions of economists, luminaries, and freedom advocates to the cause of liberty and to South Africa more broadly.

From 2021 to present, the FMF bestows the ad hoc Gail Day Unsung Heroes Award on those who, knowingly or unknowingly, have made largely unrecognised contributions to individual freedom in South Africa or abroad. The recipients are:
